The community can safely dispose of their prescription and over-the-counter medications through Operation Medicine Drop, a campaign that has been successful in collecting over 266 million pills since its inception in 2010. The campaign provides permanent drop boxes and holds more than 4,000 events across North Carolina to ensure the public can easily and safely get rid of their medications.

Lillie Malpass, executive director of PCCSU, emphasizes the importance of these drug disposal events in keeping the community safe. By providing resources such as medication lock boxes, these events help prevent medications from ending up in the wrong hands, especially youth and children. Community organizations have partnered with Operation Medicine Drop to ensure such resources are available to the public.

Local sheriffs, police departments and some fire departments maintain permanent medicine boxes for those who may have missed the event. This ongoing effort to provide safe and secure disposal options underscores the commitment of various agencies to protect communities from the potential dangers of improper drug disposal.

Operation Medicine Drop is a joint effort involving Safe Kids North Carolina, the North Carolina Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the State Bureau of Investigation. This partnership underscores the shared commitment of these agencies to promote safe medication disposal practices and protect the well-being of the community and the environment.
