The Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) and Austin Community College (ACC) have teamed up to establish a new technology and cybersecurity learning program for students. An official signing ceremony was held on June 28 at the ACC Highland campus to launch the program.

The goal of the program is to give students the chance to enhance their education while gaining practical work experience in a hands-on environment. Over the past year, more than 100 students have completed apprenticeships in diverse fields such as health sciences and manufacturing.

This partnership aligns with House Bill 584, which went into effect on September 1, 2023. The bill enables state information departments to collaborate with public junior colleges or technical institutes to address shortages in state information resources.

Texas Representative Donna Howard expressed her optimism about the partnership, stating that it has the potential to benefit ACC students and state departments involved. She emphasized the importance of creating IT cybersecurity positions that do not require a four-year degree but instead focus on relevant experience and knowledge.

In the pilot program, the DIR will serve as the employer, while ACC plans to replicate this model with future business and industry program partners. ACC’s next partnership will be with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
