Plano Independent School District (ISD) students showcased their talents at the Texas Science and Engineering Fair (TKSSEF) in College Station. Over 1,200 students competed in various science categories on March 22-23, 2024, and 13 Plano ISD students won 23 awards and honors.

One standout student was Prisha Bhatt of Plano East High School, who won the ‘Best in the State of Texas’ award in Life Science, Senior Division, for her water arsenic remediation project. Her project demonstrated innovative methods to improve plant tolerance to drought and arsenic contamination.

In addition to Bhatt’s achievement, 11 Plano ISD seniors secured top positions in their categories, earning spots in the Governor’s Academy of Science and Technology Champions. One junior division student also placed first in their category and was nominated to enter the Thermo Fisher Science Junior Innovators Challenge.

Rice Middle School student Faizan Zaki has achieved success at the Dallas Regional Spelling Bee for the third time and will represent his school and district at the National Scripps Spelling Bee. Zaki will compete in the republic competition from May 28 to May 30, 2024, after winning with the word “kurgan”.

Two seniors from Plano ISD qualified for the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) along with seven qualifiers from the Dallas Regional Science and Engineering Fair. They will present their projects globally in Dallas, Texas from May 12 to 17, 2024. Several special awards were presented at the fair. Hiruni Wansapura of Robinson High School received the ‘Engineers of Tomorrow Award’, while Andy Keen of Plano West High School was awarded the Samsung Award for his system software project.
