Plants Unleashed: Dr. Sarah Wyatt’s Pioneering Study on Gravity and Plant Growth

Dr. Sarah Wyatt, an expert in the study of molecular signaling mechanisms in plant responses, will present her latest research on the effects of gravity on plants at the final science coffee event of the spring semester. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 3 at 5:00 pm in The Front Room Cafe in the Baker University Center and will be streamed live on YouTube.

As a professor in the Department of Environmental and Plant Biology in the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Wyatt has spent years studying how plants respond to gravity, with a focus on their molecular signaling mechanisms. In her presentation, titled “Growth (Plants) Beyond Gravity,” she will discuss how gravity affects various aspects of plant growth and development, including leaf positioning, stem alignment, root growth, flower blooming, seed germination and fruit ripening.

Dr. Wyatt and her students have conducted numerous experiments to explore these effects further, including recent studies on the International Space Station where they observed how microgravity affects plant growth patterns.

The Ohio University Science Cafe Series is supported by the Ohio University Research Department and the Ohio University Chapter of Sigma Xi.
