The health of millions of people worldwide is increasingly under threat from a variety of factors, including diseases, natural disasters, conflicts and environmental degradation. These challenges continue to pose significant risks to human life and wellbeing, with many communities experiencing death, trauma, hunger and psychological distress as a result.

Burning fossil fuels is another major contributor to these challenges, not only exacerbating the climate crisis but also threatening our right to clean air. Indoor and outdoor air pollution caused by burning fossil fuels claims a life every 5 seconds, leading to serious health problems such as respiratory illnesses and cancer.

Despite the recognition of health as a fundamental human right by at least 140 countries around the world, many have not implemented laws or policies to ensure that their populations have access to basic healthcare services. This has left more than half of the world’s population – approximately 4.5 billion people – without full coverage by essential health services in 2021.

In response to these challenges, the theme for World Health Day 2024 is “My Health, My Right”. This theme aims to highlight the importance of everyone’s right to quality healthcare services, education and information, as well as access to clean drinking water, safe housing and decent working conditions. It also emphasizes the need for freedom from discrimination in accessing healthcare services. By advocating for these rights and working towards their realization, we can help ensure that everyone has access to the healthcare they need to live healthy lives.
