Fresno residents may be experiencing the effects of smoke from the June Lightning Complex fire, even though it’s not visible in the city. Heather Heinks of the Valley Air District explained that red and purple air quality ratings indicate very unhealthy conditions in foothill communities near the fire. Residents in these areas are advised to stay indoors, use air purifiers and possibly evacuate to protect themselves from the smoke.

If you are exposed to smoke, Heinks recommends taking steps to help your body recover, such as getting into an area with filtered air, showering, changing into fresh clothes and staying hydrated. It is important to flush the system to reduce the impact of foreign particles in the air.

Heinks warned that those further away from the fire may not be able to smell the smoke now, but could suddenly change in the future. In such cases, it is advisable to invest in a clean air purifier for your home to create a safe indoor environment.

Heinks stressed the importance of protecting vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, people with respiratory problems and pets from the smoke. Limiting time outdoors and creating a closed, purified space indoors can help reduce their exposure.

Short-term exposure to smoke can lead to symptoms such as headache, scratchy throat and cough, while long-term exposure can lead to more serious respiratory health problems. Resources for finding clean air centers and other help can be found on the Valley Air District website. Stay up to date with the latest news by following Kate Nemarich on social media.
