Richard E. “Dick” Mitchell, a beloved member of the Altoona community, has passed away at the age of 79 in his home on Sunday. Dick was born and raised in Altoona, the son of Lester and Catherine (Estep) Mitchell. In 1965, he married Terry Cowher in Altoona and they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary this year. Dick was a devoted husband and father to two sons, Grant and Brian, who both reside in Altoona.

Dick retired after 31 years of service from Norfolk Southern Corp., where he worked as a machinist and foreman. He also owned and operated Dick’s Train Store in Juniata for many years and worked as a DJ Spinner for 15 years. Dick was an active member of the Alto Model Train Association Inc., where he enjoyed spending time with his friends and fellow members of local model train clubs.

In addition to his work, Dick served two years in the US Navy as a radar operator. He was known for his devotion to his family, friends, and community involvement. Friends are invited to visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov
