During his visit to China, German Minister for Economic Affairs Robert Habeck emphasized the importance of finding a safe alternative to coal in achieving global climate goals. He acknowledged China’s concerns about energy security and suggested that it is possible for the country to improve its energy security without relying heavily on coal-fired power plants.

Habeck also stressed the need for cooperation with China in the fight against climate change, noting that without China’s participation, it would be difficult to achieve global climate goals. In a discussion with students at Zhejiang University, he addressed the challenges of integrating variable forms of energy like wind and solar into the existing energy system. He advocated a more efficient approach to expanding renewable energy capacity, highlighting China’s significant investments in renewable energy sources in recent years.

Habeck suggested expanding the electricity grid and using energy storage solutions, such as batteries, as a way to reduce reliance on traditional fuel-fired power plants. He emphasized that economic growth and climate action are not mutually exclusive and that the transition to a climate-neutral economy can create new opportunities for wealth and growth.
