On Sunday, Russia is observing a day of national mourning following the tragic massacre at a Moscow concert hall claimed by the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group. The attackers stormed Crocus City Hall on Friday night, opening fire with automatic weapons on the crowd and setting the fire with flammable liquid, according to investigators.

In response to the attack, posters with a candle on a black background appeared on billboards and bus stations in Moscow with the inscription “We are in mourning on 3/22/2024. President Vladimir Putin condemned the “barbaric terrorist” act in a televised address on Saturday and vowed to punish those responsible. He announced the arrest of four perpetrators who were caught while trying to flee to Ukraine.

The Kremlin reported the arrest of a total of 11 people, including four terrorists involved in the attack. The suspects, described as “foreign nationals”, were arrested in the Bryansk region near the Ukrainian-Belarusian border. Search and rescue efforts at the concert hall continue as authorities use heavy equipment to dismantle damaged structures and remove debris.

A video allegedly taken by the attackers at the concert hall was shared on social media accounts linked to ISIS. The video shows armed individuals firing weapons and setting fire to the lobby of Crocus City Hall. The suspects were said to have planned to flee to Ukraine, sparking tensions between Russia and Ukraine amidst this tragedy.
