Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is using the recent attack on Moscow as justification for a troop increase in Ukraine. After the March 22 attack at the Crocus City Hall concert hall, about 16,000 Russians signed up to fight in Ukraine. This attack resulted in 144 dead and around 500 injured. In response to this incident, Russia’s Ministry of Defense announced that in the last ten days, 16,000 citizens signed contracts for participation in a special military operation.

According to the military department, up to 1,700 people a day show up at selective recruitment centers under contract. Most of the candidates cited the desire to avenge those killed in the tragedy as the main motivation for signing the contract. The Islamic State of Khorasan province claimed responsibility for the terrorist attack on Crocus City Hall, but Russian authorities insist the attack was traced back to Ukraine, a claim denied by the Kiev government.

Russian investigators acknowledge the involvement of Islamists in the attack, claiming they received significant amounts of money and cryptocurrency from Ukraine to prepare for the attack. Russia’s foreign intelligence service linked the terrorist attack to previous Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s border regions. Moscow security forces reported arresting 15 people linked to the attack, all of them ethnic Tajiks, including four suspected perpetrators of the concert hall massacre.
