Russian opposition leader Lyudmila Stein, also known as Lucy, was sentenced to six years in prison in absentia for spreading false information about the Russian Armed Forces. The charges were based on a tweet she posted in March 2022 commenting on a video of Ukrainian soldiers shooting Russian prisoners of war.

In addition to her current sentence, Stein is also facing a four-year internet ban. She is currently abroad and has been wanted by Russia since May 2022. This is not the first time Stein has faced legal consequences for her activism – she was previously sentenced to a year of restricted freedom for violating sanitation regulations during a demonstration in support of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

The court stated that Stein, who was once a deputy of the Moscow municipality, will serve her sentence when she is extradited to Russia. Since the start of the war in Ukraine, more than 19,855 people have been detained in Russia for expressing anti-war views. Pussy Riot, known for their opposition activism and vocal criticism of the Russian government, gained notoriety in 2012. After escaping house arrest in Moscow with his girlfriend Maria Alyokhina, Stein eventually settled in Iceland, where they were granted citizenship in May 2023.

Prosecutors sought an eight-and-a-half-year sentence for Stein, who jokingly mentioned that they were betting on a nine-year sentence. Russia’s ongoing crackdown on dissent has led to increased repression of activists and opposition figures, with many facing heavy penalties for speaking out against government actions.
