Alexander Bortnikov, head of Russia’s security service FSB, accused Ukraine and Western intelligence services of facilitating last Friday’s deadly attack in Moscow. The attack left 139 people dead and was claimed by the Islamic State jihadist group. However, Ukraine has denied any involvement in the attack and dismissed Russia’s accusations as lies.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko disputed Russia’s narrative, saying that terrorists initially tried to flee to Belarus, not Ukraine. On the other hand, Putin and his government continue to point fingers at Ukraine and the West. According to Putin, Ukraine provided a “window” for attackers to cross the border despite it being heavily guarded due to its proximity to a war zone. Lukashenko, a close ally of Putin, said that Belarus and Russia coordinated actions to intercept the suspect’s car as he tried to flee toward the border with Ukraine and Belarus.

Bortnikov reiterated his belief in an international conspiracy against Russia, stating that the attack was orchestrated by radical Islamists with assistance from Western and Ukrainian special services. He also mentioned that suspects planned to travel to Ukraine and be received as heroes. Despite these claims, no evidence has been provided to support these allegations. The head of FSB also noted that the identity of the mastermind behind the attack remains unknown.

Patrushev and Bortnikov’s comments reflect Kremlin’s narrative aimed at justifying potential escalations in conflict with Ukraine. With eight suspects in pre-trial detention and an arrest of a Kyrgyz-born man believed to be involved in mass shooting tensions between Russia and Ukraine continue to escalate further.

In conclusion, while Russian officials continue their efforts to blame others for this heinous act of terrorism committed on Russian soil, evidence is lacking that supports their claims. It remains unclear what motivated this terrorist act or who was responsible for it.
