Science Vs: Fasting for Health: Separating Fact from Fiction

Fast-paced diets have become increasingly popular, with some individuals, including techies, choosing to eat just one meal a day. Health influencers promote the benefits of intermittent fasting, claiming it can aid in weight loss, longevity and even cancer prevention. However, recent headlines have raised concerns that these diets may be dangerous and linked to deaths from heart disease. Can science provide clarity on this matter?

In this episode of “Science Vs,” nutrition researchers Dr. Krista Varady and Dr. Courtney Peterson, as well as cancer researcher Professor Walter Longo, share their insights into fasting and its potential impact on health. The episode explores various aspects of fasting, including its effects on fat burning, weight loss, calorie restriction, longevity and cancer prevention.

The researchers also address mental health and eating disorder resources for those who may be considering fasting. The goal is to provide a balanced perspective on the subject while acknowledging the contributions made by various individuals and organizations who provided support for the episode.

Produced by Kaitlin Savrey, Nick DelRose and Wendy Zukerman with contributions from Michelle Dang, Rose Rimler, Joel Werner and Meryl Horn. The episode includes editing by Blithe Terrell, Caitlin Kenney and Annie-Rose Strasser and fact-checking by Eva Dasher and Michelle Dang. Mix and sound design by Peter Leonard and Bobby Lord with music by Peter Leonard, Emma Munger
