In Raleigh on Wednesday at 10 a.m., state officials will gather to seek guidance from the Scientific Advisory Board of the Secretary of Health and Environmental Quality. This board, made up of experts from various fields, will review existing data on the health risks associated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) compounds.

Exposure assessments are crucial in determining whether communities have been exposed to certain substances in their environment. These assessments involve measuring the amount, frequency, and duration of exposure. The public is welcome to attend the meeting in person at the Archdale Building or listen online via WebEx using the provided webinar number and password. In-person attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the public comment period by signing up upon arrival.

The meeting agenda will include updates to North Carolina’s PFAS rulemaking package and peer-reviewed studies published since the 2023 committee recommendation on PFMOAA, North Carolina’s unique PFAS compound. Additionally, there will be discussions on human health risk data for 1,4-dioxane in drinking water. This substance is a solvent used in chemical production and is a trace contaminant in certain consumer products such as cosmetics, detergents, and shampoos, according to the CDC.

The Scientific Advisory Board consists of experts in toxicology, public health, ecology, engineering, and other relevant fields who provide guidance and support to the Departments of Environmental Quality and Health and Human Services.
