Siemens AG, a leading provider of flexible manufacturing automation solutions, has announced plans to acquire the industrial drive technology (IDT) business of ebm-papst. The acquisition will enhance Siemens’ position as a leader in the market and enable the company to explore new opportunities in the growing market for intelligent battery drive solutions in intralogistics and mobile robot solutions.

The IDT business, which has around 650 employees, specializes in intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems in the protective ultra-low voltage range and innovative motion control systems for use in driverless transport systems. These products are designed to support automation and digitization in manufacturing processes, making them a valuable addition to Siemens’ Xcelerator portfolio.

By integrating the IDT portfolio into its existing automation offerings and leveraging its global sales network, Siemens aims to expand its market reach and create significant business opportunities in the field of flexible and autonomous factory automation. Completion of the acquisition is expected by mid-2025, subject to approval by the authorities for foreign trade and merger control.

Cedrik Neike, Member of the Management Board of Siemens AG and CEO of Digital Industries, sees ebm-papst’s portfolio of mechatronic drive systems as a perfect fit for Siemens. This acquisition will enable Siemens to explore new opportunities in the growing market for intelligent battery drive solutions in intralogistics and mobile robot solutions. As demand for mobile robots and driverless transport vehicles continues to grow, as well as the need for automation in ancillary processes such as reordering of production machines, the market for IDT products is expected to experience significant growth.
