In a major step towards decarbonizing its gas network infrastructure, Snam, an Italian energy infrastructure company, has selected Baker Hughes to provide compression turbines that can run on natural gas and gas blends with up to 10% hydrogen. As part of the partnership, Baker Hughes will supply three NovaLT 12 gas turbine compressor lines for a gas compressor station in Sulmona, Italy.

The new LT12 gas turbine technology will play a key role in the Adriatic Line project, which aims to transport energy supplies from Azerbaijan, Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean region to Northern Europe via a 425 km hydrogen-ready gas pipeline. This innovative project will contribute to the decarbonization of gas networks and enable the creation of a hydrogen economy in the region.

Ganesh Ramaswamy, executive vice president of industrial and energy technology at Baker Hughes, emphasized the importance of cooperation in developing technological solutions for decarbonizing energy ecosystems. He highlighted the company’s commitment to driving innovation and supporting the transition to clean energy sources. Ramaswamy also noted that this new LT12 gas turbine technology is a testament to Baker Hughes’ efforts to provide sustainable solutions that meet the growing needs of the energy industry.

The partnership with Snam represents a milestone in advancing the decarbonization of gas networks and accelerating the adoption of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source. With this new technology in place, Snam can continue to reduce its carbon footprint while ensuring reliable and efficient transportation of natural gas and hydrogen-ready gas along its network.

Overall, this collaboration between two leading companies in their respective fields is an important step towards building a more sustainable future for our planet.
