Jazwares, the owner of Squishmallows, and Build-A-Bear Workshop are embroiled in a legal battle over copyright issues. The dispute centers around the similarity between Squishmallows’ egg-shaped pillow animals and Build-A-Bear Workshop’s new toy, Skoosherz. Jazwares has filed a lawsuit in California for intellectual property infringement, while Build-A-Bear Workshop has retaliated with a lawsuit in Missouri.

The Squishmallows range was originally created by Jazwares and included a fox, cat, and frog. The company gained popularity during the pandemic as people bought comforting items for their homes and went viral on TikTok. Since then, there have been over 1,000 different versions of stuffed toys created by Jazwares. However, the company is now suing Build-A-Bear Workshop for allegedly copying their design.

Jazwares has also filed a lawsuit against Chinese online retailer Alibaba for allegedly selling counterfeit toys. Their lawyer, Moez Kaba, stated that imitation is not the sincerest form of flattery when it comes to intellectual property rights.

Build-A-Bear Workshop has not yet responded to a request for comment on the legal dispute.
