A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Taiwan, killing 10 people. This natural disaster has caused tension between China and Taiwan, as the international community is being drawn into the conflict. In a meeting on children’s rights, China’s deputy permanent representative to the UN Geng Shuang mentioned the earthquake in “Chinese Taiwan,” angering Taipei.

China has expressed concern over the damage in Taiwan and expressed condolences and assistance, thanking the international community for its sympathy. However, Taiwan’s government has already thanked governments and leaders for their messages of concern and support, including the United States, despite the lack of diplomatic ties.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned China as “shameless” for using the earthquake to conduct intelligence operations at the international level. The ministry says China’s actions show no goodwill toward Taiwan, using the earthquake as a tool of psychological warfare. The behavior underscores strained relations between the two countries, with Taiwan asserting its independence and China claiming it as part of its territory.
