Larry Bafundo has been named the new permanent executive director of the Technology Modernization Fund (TMF) by the General Services Administration (GSA). Bafundo, who previously served as TMF’s Deputy Executive Director, will now lead this critical program. He is a technologist with experience in leading complex digital initiatives in both public and private sectors.
Before joining GSA in January, Bafundo oversaw the Department of Labor’s modernization efforts, including a $2 billion project to improve the unemployment insurance system. He also worked as a product manager in GSA Unit 18F, focusing on transformation efforts for crime data collection and reporting.
Katie Calle, GSA Deputy Administrator, expressed confidence in Bafund’s abilities and emphasized the importance of investing in IT modernization projects through TMF. She stated that the TMF team will continue to deliver significant results for both GSA and other federal agencies.
The announcement comes as there are calls from federal IT leaders and lawmakers to revitalize the TMF as it nears the end of its funding for the US bailout. Overall, Buffund’s promotion signals a continued commitment to advancing IT modernization efforts within the federal government. His experience and leadership will be critical in driving innovation and providing safe and seamless service to the American public.
