In Texas, a woman opened fire with a long rifle at a mega evangelical church during a service, injuring two people and killing her. The shooting occurred after the English language service had ended and before the Spanish language service was about to begin. The woman claimed to have a bomb and fired several magazines as worshipers sought cover from the bullets.
The police quickly arrived on the scene and evacuated the entire mall where the church is located after rumors spread that there might be a second attacker. However, these rumors turned out to be unfounded. Joel Osteen, televangelist of the church, expressed his condolences for those affected by the shooting but also stated that “God is in control.”
The police have not yet identified or provided any information about the woman’s possible motivation or relationship with the injured child. Her car was also searched for explosives. According to Lifeway Research, an association led by the Southern Baptist Convention, 55% of pastors have made plans to respond to possible armed attacks during religious services.
