The Washington Nationals have decided to promote outfield prospect James Wood to the majors, where he will make his debut against the New York Mets. Wood played in Triple-A this season, where he boasted impressive stats with a .346 batting average, a .458 on-base percentage and a .578 slugging percentage. He also hit 10 home runs, drove in 34 runs and successfully stole 10 bases in 11 attempts.
James Wood is a unique prospect with tremendous raw power, standing 6-foot-6 and weighing 240 pounds. His size gives him an advantage over other players when it comes to hitting the ball hard, but there is still room for him to add muscle to his frame in the years to come. As he grows physically, he is expected to become one of the best players in baseball from center field. However, Wood’s long frame and patience can lead to a high strikeout rate, which was evident in his 34% strikeout rate in Double-A. It will be crucial for him to lower this rate to unlock his superstar potential.
To make room for Wood on both the active and 40-man rosters, Eddie Rosario was designated for assignment. Rosario had been with the Nationals since 2019 and had a solid season in Triple-A this year with a .287 batting average and an on-base percentage of .359. However, he struggled at the plate in Double-A with only three home runs and a strikeout rate of 32%. With Rosario out of the picture, Wood will have an opportunity to prove himself at the major league level and make an impact on the Nationals’ lineup.
