The American Athletic Conference is reportedly considering Tim Pernetti as its next commissioner, according to sources at ESPN. Pernetti is currently the president of IMG Academy and has a diverse background in television, college sports and campus experience. He brings valuable experience from his time as Chief Business Officer for New York City FC in the MLS and previously served as the athletic director at Rutgers.

Pernetti’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for the AAC, as they recently added several new teams to the conference. He will replace Mike Aresco, who has been commissioner since the league’s inception 11 years ago. The AAC currently has a television contract with ESPN that will run through the 2031-32 school year.

Despite a setback early in his career involving a scandal involving abusive behavior by a basketball coach at Rutgers, Pernetti continued to excel in the industry and was considered a rising star in college sports administration. His diverse background and non-traditional hiring in the commissary space make him an attractive candidate for the role of commissioner.
