Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient Chris Haley, who runs the Catch A Lift Foundation, a group that provides mental health support to former military members through exercise, expressed his shock and sadness over the recent death of one of his program’s participants, Jean Carlos Aponte. Forty-year-old Aponte is in critical condition after an apparent self-induced drug overdose. On Tuesday, his wife Sarah Ashley Gama (38) and two-year-old son Ethan were found dead in their home.

Aponte had reached out to Haley for help with his mental health issues before the tragedy occurred. He had been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and a traumatic brain injury. Haley accepted Aponte into the program and was surprised by the turn of events. “It’s kind of to stop this,” he said on Wednesday. “It’s a shame because that’s the whole reason our organization exists.”

Haley says that Aponte had a desire to make things right for his family, despite allegations that he killed his wife and child. “That was one of the things that I remember very clearly that he wanted to do things right and be a positive example to his family,” he said.

The investigation into the incident is still active, but no charges have been filed yet. Police spent Wednesday searching for evidence in the canal near Aponte’s home, including what neighbors believed to be a cell phone.
