Professional golfer Joost Luiten had a frustrating day at the DP World Tour Championships in Dubai when he lost three of his clubs on the fairway. After making a bogey, Luiten threw his driver into a tree where it got stuck. He then threw another club in an attempt to retrieve the driver, but that club also got caught on the branches and leaves of the tree. Despite several attempts to dislodge clubs with the help of tournament officials, Luiten lost a third club in the process.
Luiten tried various methods to free the stuck clubs, including throwing other clubs at the tree and jumping to hit it with his ensign’s sign, but was ultimately unsuccessful. He finished the hole with 11 clubs and finished his championship with three over par, placing third from the bottom. In the end, one volunteer managed to save the stored bats. Nicolai Hojgaard eventually won the tournament.
Joost Luiten summed up his experience by saying: “That sums up my week nicely. The incident adds to the list of interesting occurrences in recent golf tournaments, such as Rory McIlroy’s shot landing in a spectator’s lap.”
