An explosion of batteries in a warehouse at a lithium battery factory in South Korea has resulted in the deaths of at least 22 people and eight injuries. The tragedy occurred at a facility owned by Arisel, a South Korean battery manufacturer, located 45 km south of Seoul. Sixteen workers were initially reported dead and three injured, but the death toll later rose to 22, including 18 Chinese workers and one Laotian.
The fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. and was brought under control by 3:00 p.m. More than 100 workers were present on the spot when the fire broke out, and some people are still being traced. According to the firemen, the cause of the fire was an explosion of batteries in a warehouse.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol instructed authorities to use all available resources to search and rescue those still trapped in the building. Residents were advised to stay indoors and close windows due to smoke from the fire.
Lithium batteries are commonly found in phones, laptops, and electric vehicles, but they pose a risk of explosion or fire when overheated or damaged. South Korea is a major exporter of lithium batteries and is home to prominent companies such as LG Energi Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK On in the industry. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of proper handling and disposal of these batteries to prevent accidents like this from happening again.
