In tragic news, Kelvin Kiptum, the world record holder in the men’s marathon, passed away at the age of 24 in a car accident in Kenya. His coach Garvais Hakizimana also lost his life in the same incident. The accident occurred in Kaptagat area along Elgeyo Marakwet road.
Kiptum was known for his impressive victories at major marathons such as winning the London Marathon and breaking Eliud Kipchoge’s world record at the Chicago Marathon just last year. He was scheduled to compete in the Rotterdam Marathon in April this year.
The loss of Kiptum was mourned as an incredible tragedy by many, including World Athletics president Seb Coe, Kenyan police chief Peter Mulinge and former Kenyan prime minister. His contribution to athletics and the Kenyan nation will be greatly missed.
