After Elon Musk took over Twitter in 2022, the platform underwent a major change. The blue tick that was once a sought-after status symbol for high-profile verified users vanished, and it could be bought by anyone. This change made it harder for users to identify authentic accounts, which led to the spread of misinformation on X under Musk’s leadership.

On Wednesday, Musk announced that users with more than 2,500 paying followers would get free Premium access, which comes with reduced ads and other benefits. Those with more than 5,000 such followers would get free Premium Plus, a more expensive tier that eliminates ads, among other perks. This move sparked a flurry of excitement on the platform as users eagerly awaited their new badges.

However, not all users were happy with their new special status. Some made it clear that they did not pay for it and expressed frustration with the system. The blue tick has become a joke on the platform as some users defended themselves on Twitter and others expressed relief that they hadn’t received the badge yet.

While some journalists are excited about their new status symbol, others are less thrilled with it. At least one Business Insider reporter seems unimpressed by their new badge and some other users just want it removed altogether. Despite this, many are enjoying their new privileges and looking forward to seeing what other perks come with being a verified user under Musk’s leadership on Twitter.
