Vermont Democrats have pushed for a ban on neonicotinoids, arguing that corn, the state’s largest vegetable crop, poses a threat to bees. However, scientists have pointed out that corn is wind-pollinated and is not a food source for bees. Because neonicotinoids are seed treatments and not spray chemicals, they do not harm bees unless the pests directly try to eat the plants.
Despite decades of safe use of neonicotinoids, Vermont’s Agricultural Innovation Board (AIB) states there is no scientific basis for banning these insecticides. The Agency for Agriculture, Food and Market agrees that the ban is unnecessary. Now it’s up to Gov. Phil Scott to decide whether to sign the bill into law or veto it.
Scientists, farmers and regulatory agencies in Vermont warn that a ban would do more harm than good. Neonicotinoids have been developed to be safer for plants, animals and the environment compared to older insecticides. If the ban is implemented, farmers would have to go back to using harsher pyrethroid and organophosphate insecticides to protect their crops, resulting in a 375% increase in toxic chemicals.
Chemical tests conducted on hives show that neonics are barely present, while other chemicals such as thymol and older insecticides are more widespread and harmful to bees. Despite claims that neonics are harmful to bees, bee populations in Vermont have increased by 43% due to their use.
Governor Scott now has an opportunity to prevent politicization of science by vetoing Vermont’s neonicotinoid ban. Denying scientific evidence and applying unnecessary regulations will not demonstrate true state leadership
