Suddenly, each year, around 350,000 people experience an out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. Surprisingly, 40% of these incidents involve women. Despite the stigma surrounding mental health, more and more people are seeking treatment for these issues.

Nanci Dagefoerde, an advanced practice nurse at OSF HealthCare Cardiovascular Institute, explains that sudden cardiac arrest can happen to any adult, especially those 30 and older. Factors such as risk factors, family history, and heart defects can contribute to the likelihood of sudden cardiac arrest. This condition results from an irregular heartbeat or loss of electrical activity in the heart, leading to a lack of breathing and pulse in the affected person.

Dagefoerde distinguishes between sudden cardiac arrest and heart attack by explaining that a heart attack is caused by a blockage in the coronary artery that surrounds the heart. Sarah Shoemaker, a certified nurse midwife at OSF HealthCare advises women who are considering pregnancy to discuss concerns with their healthcare providers early on preferably before becoming pregnant. Shoemaker emphasizes the importance of maintaining stability and health for women who have found the right combination of medications.

In some cases where medication changes are necessary doctors may recommend supplements taking into account each patient’s individual needs and circumstances while weighing pros and cons to determine what’s best for their benefit. It is important for individuals to be aware of their risk factors and take action towards maintaining a healthy lifestyle while seeking medical treatment when necessary.
