The United States House has approved a $95 billion economic aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Ukraine received the largest share of aid, with $61 billion allocated to them. Israel received $26 billion for humanitarian aid in Gaza, while Taiwan and other countries in the region received $8.1 billion to counter actions by China.
The approval was made possible by a change in the stance of the Republican Party, which had previously been skeptical about supporting Ukraine. President Joe Biden requested the funding in October because of a shortage of military products from Ukraine. Republicans have previously prioritized domestic issues such as border security and the national debt, but recipient countries have pushed for aid.
In addition to humanitarian aid, a national security law was also passed that includes a provision on the forced sale of the TikTok platform. The package will now go to the Senate for approval, and Biden has promised to sign it immediately. The approval was celebrated by legislators, protesters and representatives of the beneficiary countries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the aid, saying it would save thousands of lives and was awaiting Senate approval. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz emphasized bipartisan support for the aid package and hopes the Senate will quickly approve it.
