ST. PETER — St. Peter senior Marty Anderson has once again certified for the Class A state singles tennis match, but this time in singles play.
Anderson lived up to his No. 1 seed by outlasting second-seeded Michael Frost of Holy Family members Catholic in a 3-set championship match, six-1, three-six, six-four, in the course of Thursday’s final round of Section two singles at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.
Frost later doubled his 2022 state singles bid by holding off a accurate second challenger from Blue Earth Area’s Joe Frundt with a six-1, six- choice.
Anderson and Frost open state singles play at eight a.m. Thursday, June eight, at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
Anderson, of Gustavus Adolphus College, won the sectional final Thursday by fending off Frundt, six-1, 7-five, in the course of their semifinal clash, though Frost posted straight-set six-two victories more than Blue Area’s Jamie Johnson Earth. in their semi-final match.
Frundt then won the Section two bronze medal by defeating Johnson in the third-spot match, six-, six-1. Each Blue Earth Region players earned all-about honors by putting in the leading 4.
Litchfield’s Alex Dreger and Brayden Olson also returned to the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center by topping St. Peter’s Anders Dixon and Will Elias in the doubles championship Thursday, 7-six (7-four), six-.
Dreger and Olson, Section two doubles qualifiers final spring, opened semifinal action with straight-set, six-1 victories more than St. James Area’s Andrea Rivera and Brennan Kern earlier Thursday in St. Peter.
Dixon and Elias reached the doubles final by fending off Southwest Christian’s Garrett Lyles and Shawn Johnson in a 3-set semifinal marathon, four-six, 7-five, six-two.
Lyles and Johnson, having said that, rallied to defeat Rivera and Kern in an extended third-spot match, five-7, six-1, six-, to stave off a true second challenge for a state berth.
The Class A state doubles match starts at ten a.m. Thursday, June eight, at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
