In the town of Pragsdorf, located in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the family gathered to celebrate their son Joel’s seventh birthday. Despite the tragedy that had occurred just two days earlier when Gary K. was convicted to seven years and nine months in prison for killing Joel, who was only six years old. The family wanted to put aside their pain and sorrow to honor their son on his special day.

Joel’s four siblings, uncle Felix, aunt Tini, grandparents and friends joined the K family at a meadow near the soccer field where the tragic incident took place. The family decorated the space with photos, candles, stuffed animals and wreaths to create a festive atmosphere in Joel’s memory. His parents said that staying at this location brought them closer to their beloved son, as he spent his last moments there.

The celebration was brightened up with strawberry shortcake and a Minion-themed cake, Joel’s favorite. Despite the somber circumstances, the family wanted to remember him joyfully. Reflecting on Joel’s birth, his mother Kathleen recalled fond memories of his early days and the joy he brought to their lives. Although Joel could no longer be physically present to celebrate with them, his family believed that he was watching over them from above. The birthday celebration served as a way to honor and cherish Joel’s memory while keeping his spirit alive in their hearts.
