Federal Health IT Strategic Plan Proposes to Align and Coordinate Systems for Improved Patient Care Delivery

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, or ONC, within the Department of Health and Human Services is requesting input from industry stakeholders on a proposed strategy for coordinating federal health information technology systems in patient care delivery. The draft plan, titled the Federal Health IT Strategic Plan 2024-2030, outlines a set of goals aimed at improving access to health data, promoting equity in healthcare, and enhancing public health data infrastructure.

The plan is centered around four main objectives: promoting health and well-being, improving the delivery and experience of care, encouraging research and innovation, and connecting the health system to health data. Mickey Tripathi, National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, emphasized the collaborative effort that involved more than 25 federal agencies in developing this draft plan. The goal is to align and coordinate health IT initiatives across the federal government.

Tripathi highlighted the importance of accessing, sharing and utilizing electronic health information (EHI) in achieving the missions of various federal agencies involved in providing healthcare and improving health outcomes. The public is invited to provide feedback on the draft strategic plan by May 28.
