The 2024 Virginia State Science and Engineering Fair at Old Dominion University was a huge success, with students from James Madison High School, George C. Marshall and Thomas Jefferson High Schools of Science and Technology taking home the top prizes. These top-performing students now have the opportunity to compete at the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles from May 12-17.
Among the grand prize winners were Wesley Kang of Madison, who focused on predicting wastewater-induced earthquakes using a new mathematical model. Thomas Jefferson’s Anant Khandelwal, Sritan Motati and Siddhant Sood won for their 3D prototype project using conditional diffusion-based mesh synthesis. Gabriela Conde of the Marshall School was recognized for her work on eradicating the biofilm of E. coli on medical devices using optimal sound frequencies. Valeria Novoa of Madison impressed the judges with her project to optimize graphite carbon nitride for hydrogen storage.
