The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has confirmed on Thursday that there is a humanitarian crisis in Gaza and ordered Israel to provide urgent aid to the region. In an order published on its website, the ICJ stated that Israel must fulfill its obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide by ensuring that basic services and humanitarian aid are provided to Gaza on a large scale without delay.
The court recommended that aid be provided by increasing the capacity and number of land crossings, keeping them open as long as necessary. South Africa has submitted a new application to the ICJ expressing grave concern over the massacres, injuries, and large-scale destruction caused by the Israeli ground military offensive in Rafah.
Although the MSP’s orders are binding, there is no way for it to enforce them. The conflict initiated by Hamas has led to widespread hunger among the population in Gaza, with 100% of the population facing severe food insecurity according to UN warnings. Despite strict control of humanitarian aid by land, some countries have been airdropping supplies into Gaza.
The situation in Gaza remains a challenge for implementing these orders, but countries around the world continue to provide support through various means to resolve the growing crisis in Gaza.
