European intelligence services have documented activities designed to organize pro-Russian initiatives and media campaigns in EU countries with the aim of promoting Russian foreign policy and undermining the position of Ukraine and EU mechanisms. In January, a Polish citizen suspected of spying for Russian intelligence services was indicted as part of an investigation that ended with the discovery of a Russian network trying to influence upcoming elections in various countries, including Poland, Hungary, Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The operation revealed Russia’s efforts to gain influence in EU countries and manipulate political processes.
The civilian counterintelligence service of the Czech Republic announced the discovery of this Russian network, which was involved in transferring funds to politicians from various European countries, including a far-right party in Germany. Sanctions were imposed on pro-Russian Ukrainian politicians Viktor Medvedchuk and Artem Marchevsky as well as the Czech company “Col Europe” connected to Medvedchuk.
In addition to these findings, there has been an increase in propaganda, disinformation, and political provocations aimed at building Russian spheres of influence in Europe. An international website has been set up to publish articles, statements, comments and interviews with a biased pro-Russian tone related to the international situation and the war.
