ICJ Imposes New Interim Measures Against Israel Amid Ongoing Hunger Crisis in Gaza Strip

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued new interim measures against Israel on Thursday after South Africa filed a second request with the court on March 6 regarding the hunger situation in the Gaza Strip. This followed a lawsuit that South Africa filed against Israel at the ICJ over alleged genocide in the Gaza Strip in late December, which resulted in over 32,500 deaths.

The South African submission asked the International Court of Justice for new or modified precautionary measures to ensure the safety of the 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza, including more than a million children. The court ordered Israel to adopt all necessary and effective measures, in coordination with the United Nations, to ensure the uninterrupted and extensive supply of humanitarian aid to the population of Gaza. This includes food, water, electricity, fuel, shelter, clothing, hygiene and sanitation, as well as medical supplies and care. In addition, the court emphasized the need to increase the capacity and number of land crossings for the delivery of aid and to keep them open as long as necessary.

Furthermore, Israel is called upon to ensure that its armed forces do not commit acts that could violate the rights of Palestinians in Gaza, including any actions that impede the delivery of humanitarian aid. Israel is obliged to submit a report on the fulfillment of these additional measures within one month.
