The New Mexico State Literacy Pilot Program recently welcomed two Teacher Preparation Inspectorate (TPI-US) evaluators to UNM’s College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS). The inspectors visited the college during the week of April 21, where they conducted observations, interviews, and curriculum reviews to assess how well COEHS prepares its graduates to support students in literacy.

The TPI-US evaluators evaluated COEHS in three domains: teaching the science of reading, teaching literacy to students at field sites, and partnerships between community colleges and school districts. The report recognized COEHS as a leader in teaching the science of reading to teacher candidates, noting their unique commitment that exceeded standards seen elsewhere in the country.

Preliminary findings highlighted the strength of the COEHS teacher preparation program, praising evidence-based courses, field experiences, and partnerships with schools that facilitate the implementation of literacy science in New Mexico classrooms. The initial assessment recognized the college’s significant impact on promoting literacy in public schools and reservations.

Feedback from TPI inspectors dated 26 April praised COEHS for its deep institution and program, highlighting its significant impact on schools. A second site visit is scheduled for the next academic year, and a formal evaluation is expected in the coming months. The visit was intended to provide an independent assessment of the college’s commitment to evidence-based practices and structured literacy, a goal consistent with efforts to improve literacy outcomes for New Mexico students.
