Reimagining the Economy: Ladakh’s Traditional Values and the Need for Localization with Helena Norberg-Hodge

In the final episode of SystemShift Season 2, we are joined by Helena Norberg-Hodge, a leading figure in the New Economy movement. Helena witnessed the negative effects of modern economic systems and consumer culture, such as unemployment, poverty, environmental degradation and social problems such as depression and division.

Drawing on her experiences in Ladakh, India, Helena talks about how traditional values and community bonds have been eroded by modernization and consumerism. She advocates localization as a way to promote environmental sustainability and community well-being through decentralized, community-driven efforts.

Helena critiques colonial economic theories and proposes effective solutions for a more interconnected relationship-based economy. She emphasizes the necessity of systemic transformation in order to eliminate the shortcomings of the current economic model.

SystemShift is essential for those interested in transitioning to a sustainable and fair economic system. Led by Greenpeace Sweden campaigner Carl Schliter, this podcast is a Greenpeace Nordic production and can be found on various platforms such as Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Soundcloud, Spotify, YouTube and more.
