Jack Dorsey has announced his decision to step down from the board of Bluesky, a social networking service he helped fund and popularize a year ago. This decision comes after Dorsey expressed regret over selling Twitter to Elon Musk, who now owns the platform X.

In his post on X, Dorsey announced new philanthropic grants for open Internet protocols, which he called “freedom technology.” He also noted that corporations can also rely on open protocols. On X, Dorsey now follows just three people: Musk, Edward Snowden, and Stella Assange. This change in his following suggests a possible improvement in relations between Dorsey and Musk following their previous falling out after Musk’s takeover of Twitter.

Bluesky was created as a network and protocol in line with Dorsey’s vision of Twitter as a service without centralized control. It was made available to all interested users in February and has attracted attention for providing an alternative to Twitter following Musk’s acquisition. However, Bluesky has since been overshadowed by Meta Platforms Inc.’s Threads launch as the most viable alternatives. When asked about his status on the Bluesky board by X, Dorsey said no.
