A recent investigation from the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General revealed that millions of Americans enrolled in Medicaid may face obstacles when trying to access mental health and addiction treatment services. The report examined eight states – Arizona, Illinois, Kansas, Mississippi, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina and Texas – and discovered that these states are not adhering to laws requiring Medicaid managed care plans to provide mental health coverage and services for substance use disorders that are no more restrictive than coverage for other medical or surgical benefits.
The study found that these states do not support the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, which prohibits insurance companies from imposing more restrictive limits on mental health and substance use disorder benefits compared to other medical benefits.
