In Iowa, a group of 26 athletes filed a legal action over geolocation tracking they believe violated their constitutional rights during an investigation into sports betting. According to ESPN.com, the 47-page lawsuit alleges that investigators used third-party software to monitor athletes without obtaining a search warrant.
The case highlights the delicate balance between preventing illegal activities like gambling and protecting individuals’ basic privacy rights. Of the plaintiffs, sixteen were charged with underage gambling offenses, resulting in twelve pleading guilty. The four faced identity theft charges, which were dropped in March after prosecutors admitted the state overstepped its authority. Additionally, ten athletes faced NCAA and/or NFL sanctions resulting in lost playing time.
