The Bethlehem Central High School Odyssey of the Mind team has achieved a remarkable feat by placing 2nd at the New York State Odyssey Finals in Syracuse. This exceptional team, comprised of Jeremy Cintron Ortiz, Bridger Lewis, Stephanie Piccolo, Nex Kridlig, Rayne Byter and Sierra Obernesser, will now advance to the world finals at Iowa State University in May.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international problem-solving competition for students in grades 12-12. Teams work collaboratively to solve challenges using both traditional and non-traditional methods, including props, costumes, acting and humor in their solutions.
One of the challenges that the BCHS team faced was designing and constructing a balsa wood structure that could sustain as much weight as possible. Despite weighing only 14 grams, their structure successfully supported over 300 pounds during an exhilarating tournament performance.
In addition to the high school team, four high school teams competed in the New York State Finals. One of these teams, consisting of Liam Singh, Katie VanApeldoorn, Owen Tarrier, James Richman and Ann Hu, placed 3rd in their problem and division.
Congratulations to all the BC Odyssey teams and their coordinator, Rebecca Beiter!
