Portland Thorns and Canada women’s forward Janine Becky will miss the upcoming NVSL season and the 2023 Women’s Globe Cup just after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her ideal knee, her club announced Friday.

Beckie suffered the injury Wednesday throughout the Thorns’ preseason friendly against the U.S. U-23 Women’s Youth National Group. The 28-year-old will undergo surgery in the coming weeks, the Thorns stated.

“Heartbroken is an understatement,” Becky stated in a statement on social media. “However, the medical doctors confirmed yesterday that I tore the ACL throughout the game on Wednesday evening.

“Operating difficult in the off-season for what ought to have been one particular of the largest seasons of my profession, defending the title with the Portland Thorns and of course playing in the Globe Cup for Canada, becoming out for extended periods of time is a hard pill to swallow.”
