China’s Vision for the Future of Air Travel: The Rise of Flying Cars and Low-Altitude Aviation

China is set to accelerate the development of flying cars as part of a larger effort to establish the new low-altitude aviation sector as a new engine for economic growth. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has announced pilot programs for transporting passengers using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, commonly known as air taxis, in advanced regions such as Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macau. The goal is to achieve “initial development” of a new aviation equipment industry by 2030. By then, eVTOLs and drones will operate at lower altitudes to provide intelligent, environmentally friendly air travel and transportation services for various sectors of society.

The push for the development of the “low-altitude economy” was first highlighted in the government’s performance report during the annual parliamentary meetings that ended on March 11. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to innovation and growth, signaling the importance of the aviation industry in driving economic progress. The plan laid out by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology sets the stage for the future of air transport in China, with a focus on sustainability, efficiency and technological progress.
