Harvard College of Arts and Sciences has appointed Biology Professor Jeff W. Lichtman as its next dean of science, according to a statement from FAS Dean Hopi E. Hoekstre on Tuesday afternoon. Lichtman will take up his new role on July 1st, succeeding current Dean of Sciences Christopher W. Stubbs, who is expected to retire at the end of the academic year. Despite this, Stubbs will remain involved in FAS administration and continue to serve as Hoekstra’s special advisor on artificial intelligence.

Lichtman is well-known for teaching the introductory Neuroscience 80 course and is currently one of the top faculty members in FAS as a professor of arts and sciences. As a leading figure in Harvard’s Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, Lichtman serves on various committees, including the Curriculum Committee and the Mind, Brain, and Behavior Program Committee. He was instrumental in advancing neuroscience pedagogy at Harvard through his participation in the MBB program, which promotes interdisciplinary collaboration.

Hoekstra praised Lichtman for his visionary approach to both research and education, noting his ability to bring people together to advance knowledge. His research primarily focuses on mapping the brain’s pathways, known as the “connectome.” He developed innovative methods for visualizing neural connections in the brain. Due to his new administrative duties, Lichtman will no longer be teaching Neuro 80 in the fall; however, it is planned that another instructor will continue to teach the course. This appointment reflects Hoekstra’s commitment to fostering collaboration and excellence within the College of Arts and Sciences.

Overall, this appointment marks an exciting new chapter for both Lichtman and Harvard University as they continue to push boundaries in scientific research and education.
