A new design for the Tower of the Americas is being considered in San Antonio. The organization behind the project, Hemisfair, plans to build a “Sports Field” pavilion instead of a pond at the base of the structure. This project is part of the planned Tower Park in Hemisfair and has philanthropic support for funding.

Last fall, Hemisfair rolled out the first phase of Civic Park, which added green space to the grounds west of the tower. The new pavilion is a response to public feedback on the need for more public recreational spaces. It will replace the existing pond, which has existed since 1988 but is considered to have a negative impact due to unpleasant odors.

The pavilion will consist of a concrete slab primarily used as a basketball court. It will have a 28-foot oval roof that will provide shade for spectators. The space will also be available for community events and can be rented for those purposes. Although renderings of the project are not yet available, it is expected to be completed in time for future events at Tower Park.
