New Director for Alaska Seafood Cooperative Brings Expertise and Passion for Sustainable Fishing Practices

Sarah Webster has been appointed as the new Director of Science Projects at the Alaska Seafood Cooperative (AKSC), taking over from John Gowin, who has held the position for nearly 30 years. While Gauvin will step down from this role, he will continue to work on some of the scientific projects already underway for the cooperative.

Webster brings a wealth of experience in Alaska fisheries science to her new position, having previously served as a fisheries scientist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, focusing on recreational groundfish research in the charter fishing sector. She also managed the research program for Alaska Pacific University’s Fisheries, Aquatic Sciences and Technology program, where she supported projects across a range of industries. In addition to her work in Alaska, Webster also served on the International Pacific Longline Commission’s Management Strategy Advisory Board, working directly with longlines.

The AKSC is an Amendment 80 fleet cooperative that fishes for walleye, Pacific perch, and Alaskan Atka mackerel. The cooperative works with fisheries scientists from NOAA and other institutions to conduct research to modify fishing practices and gear to help members reduce bycatch and minimize the impact of fishing on marine habitats. With Webster’s expertise in fisheries science and her passion for sustainable fishing practices, she is well-positioned to lead these efforts and ensure that AKSC remains at the forefront of responsible seafood production in Alaska.
