In Buffalo, a new chapter is being written in the city’s sports culture as Peter Marlette Jr., a West New York native, announced plans to bring a United Soccer League (USL) championship team to the city by 2026. Marlette will serve as president of the organization, working with stakeholders to make this dream a reality.
The goal is to showcase Buffalo’s passion for sports and establish a professional soccer club that embodies community values such as hard work, resilience, innovation and pride. Marlette expressed his commitment to building a USL championship-winning club and highlighted the opportunity for Buffalo to join the growing soccer movement in the United States. Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown praised the efforts of Buffalo Pro Soccer in bringing professional soccer to the city. Marlette’s experience playing for FC Buffalo and managing Union Omaha brings valuable expertise to this project. Additionally, his participation in Major League Soccer with FC Dallas further strengthens his knowledge of building successful soccer clubs.
The USL Championship offers high-level competition for men’s professional teams sanctioned by Division II American Soccer. With nearly 6,000 fans per game on average and some teams drawing over 10,000 fans, the league provides a dedicated fan base and competitive environment for aspiring professional soccer players. Buffalo Pro Soccer aims to capitalize on Buffalo’s sporting reputation and establish itself as an important player in the soccer landscape.
Buffalo has always been known for its love of sports, from hockey to basketball. Now it is set to add another exciting sporting option – professional soccer – thanks to Marlette Jr.’s leadership and visionary plans.
