The second part of this series focuses on DeLaval’s new VMS solution technology, also known as batch milking. In traditional parlors or rotary systems, a herd gate is used to move the cows at the same time. However, in VMS batch milking, this gate is not required. Instead, cows can enter the holding area and exit freely, moving between robots at their own pace. This setup provides a more relaxed, stress-free environment for the cows during the milking process.

VMS Solutions Manager Jason French explains that batch milking involves cows going to a robot instead of a traditional milking parlour. In this system, cows are moved into a group of robots that act as a parlor, rather than farmers leading them to a traditional parlor or rotation. French emphasizes that VMS batch milking allows farmers to stick to schedules by using robots to milk cows consistently. The robots maintain a stable position to ensure an even milking process for each cow, even in the absence of the male.

The cowshed has a different atmosphere, with relaxed cows enjoying a pleasant space with fans and the freedom to move from one robot to another. With VMS batch milking, farmers can focus on other tasks while the robots handle the milk production process. This innovative technology offers numerous benefits for both farmers and cows alike, making it an attractive option for dairy farms looking for ways to improve efficiency and productivity while maintaining animal welfare standards.
